Twitter Update: Direct Message limit to exceed from 140 characters to 10,000

Its seems as if Twitter has taken its private messaging to another level. In its developer blog, the company has announced it would get rid of the 140-character limit on direct messaging. It will now allow users to send direct messages that are 10,000 characters long.

Now, don't you keep wondering whether that this means the same for the public side of Twitter. No! Tweets will continue to be the 140 characters they are today according to what the company wrote in another blog.

I'm quite sure its because of the ever-increasing competition in the messaging space with the likes of WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger, the company sure knows instant messaging will be a big deal in the future.

As long as I know, the new changes won’t come until July. Moreover, Twitter has some recommendations to ensure that the apps and services can handle the longer messaging format. The blog asks users to, “review API additions, update your GET requests so you will be able to receive the full length of DM text and adjust your app UI to accommodate longer DM text.

Interestingly, this news comes on the same day as co-founder Dick Costolo decides to step down as the CEO. Co-founder Jack Dorsey, who served as CEO during Twitter’s early years, will temporarily take the charge while the San Francisco company looks for a permanent replacement.

Investors greeted the move with enthusiasm, driving Twitter shares up nearly 6 percent in late trading after the announcement Thursday afternoon. Both Dorsey and Costolo, however, expressed confidence in the company’s direction and said the board isn’t seeking major changes.

Twitter offers relief from trolls: Share Blocked lists

For those who have considered quitting Twitter because of the unnecessary tweets they are subject to, now have relief offered by Twitter. According to the Twitter blog:

“Today we’re making it possible to share block lists on twitter.com. This new, advanced feature makes blocking multiple accounts easy, fast and community driven.

Mute and block are tools to help you control your Twitter experience. While many users find them useful, we also recognise that some users — those who experience high volumes of unwanted interactions on Twitter — need more sophisticated tools.

That’s where this new feature comes in. You can now export and share your block lists with people in your community facing similar issues or import another user’s list into your own account and block multiple accounts all at once, instead of blocking them individually. We also hope these advanced blocking tools will prove useful to the developer community to further improve users’ experience.”

Just earlier this year, Twitter CEO Dick Costolo admitted to how bad Twitter was at dealing with abuse and trolls, ”

We suck at dealing with abuse and trolls on the platform and we’ve sucked at it for years. It’s no secret and the rest of the world talks about it every day. We lose core user after core user by not addressing simple trolling issues that they face every day.

I’m frankly ashamed of how poorly we’ve dealt with this issue during my tenure as CEO. It’s absurd. There’s no excuse for it. I take full responsibility for not being more aggressive on this front. It’s nobody else’s fault but mine, and it’s embarrassing.”

Google unveils Sidewalk labs initiative to improve city life

The Gud1: How to Reserve Your Free Windows 10 Upgrade?

Google unveiled a company devoted to making a thriving business out of solving big-city problems such as overpriced housing and traffic-snarled streets. Sidewalk Labs based in New York City was described as an “urban innovation” firm with a mission to develop technology that makes living and running big cities better.

“Sidewalk will focus on improving city life for everyone by developing and incubating urban technologies to address issues like cost of living, efficient transportation and energy usage,” chief executive Larry Page said in a post at the Internet titan’s Google+ social network.

Sidewalk will be headed by Dan Doctoroff, a former chief executive of Bloomberg LP and New York city deputy mayor of economic development under then Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

“We are at the beginning of a historic transformation in cities,” Doctoroff said in a release. “We hope that Sidewalk will play a major role in developing technology products, platforms and advanced infrastructure that can be implemented at scale in cities around the world.”

While financial details were not disclosed, Page described Sidewalk as a “relatively modest investment” in building a business that is not only different from Google’s core internet operations but which could improve people’s lives.

He put Sidewalk on par with Google (x) lab headed by Google co-founder Sergey Brin, and known for ‘moonshots’ like self-driving cars.

“Making long-term, 10X bets like this is hard for most companies to do, but Sergey and I have always believed that it’s important,” Page said in his Google+ post. “And as more and more people around the world live, work and settle in cities, the opportunities for improving urban environments are endless.”
