WhatsApp features updated: Custom notifications, Mark as Unread, low data setting and more

WhatsApp features updated

WhatsApp has added a whole new range of features to its upcoming Android update. According to Android Police, WhatsApp has added as many as five updates within a span of 24 hours. The latest features will be visible on version no. v2.12.194.

You can now mark conversations as unread so as to give you a visual reminder in case you want to respond to your contacts later. Holding on to the conversation will pull up a menu showing you the ‘Mark as Unread‘ option below the archive chat, delete chat, email chat options.

Custom Notifications is another new feature which will be seen below the Media section of your chat settings, along with mute chat. Custom Notifications option lets you select tones, vibration length, light, popup notifications, call ringtone, among others.

Since WhatsApp has started the calling option, there have been some feature updates on that front as well. Now you get the Low Data usage option for voice calls on cellular data networks. You can also check the amount of data sent out and received by WhatsApp in case you are monitoring your data usage. You also have options such as ‘Google Drive backup bytes sent’ and ‘Google Drive backup bytes received’, but no way to trigger a Google Drive backup. Maybe that’s a future update.

The update will roll out gradually. But in case you are desperate to get these features, you can download the update from the v2.12.194 from APK mirror.

Google Drive backup is back

Thanks to several commenters and tipsters, we've now confirmed that Google Drive backup is back in WhatsApp, albeit hidden. You won't be able to trigger it from anywhere inside the app, but when WhatsApp tries to do its 4:00 local backup, you'll probably get a notification telling you that the backup failed and you need to grant permission to access your Google Drive folders. Upon doing so, the backup will start and you'll have all of your chats and pics (no videos) sent to Google Drive and available to restore from - likely the same way as we discussed previously when the feature first showed up.

There's no telling whether the option will remain hidden like this or if the more detailed configuration setting screen we saw before will be back later on. At this point, it's all conjecture whether Drive backups snuck in by mistake or are being tested on early adopters like us. Thanks Samuel, Linus, Michal, and everyone who confirmed the feature as working for them.
