Instagram finally allows users to shoot in landscape mode; Square mode also stays on
The move is the first major alteration to the photo-sharing, social media service since Facebook Inc bought it for $1 billion in 2012, and addresses the wishes of many of its 300 million users, who have been constrained by the square format.
“It boils down to giving advertisers and users more options,” said Debra Aho Williamson, a social media marketing and advertising analyst. “You want people to be able to see more of your ad. It’s something advertisers are definitely going to be interested in.”
One in five photos and videos posted on the service do not fit the square format, Instagram said in a blog post. “Friends get cut out of group shots, the subject of your video feels cramped and you can’t capture the Golden Gate Bridge from end to end,” it said.
Image: Instagram Blog
The move should help Instagram in its battle with newer rivals such as Snapchat for users in the fast-moving messaging and media-sharing market.
At the same time, it should attract more advertising revenue for Instagram, which said in June it would open its platform to all advertisers by the end of the year, rather than just to select brands.
Instagram is expected to generate nearly $600 million in advertising revenue by the end of this year and $2.8 billion in 2017, according to projections from research firm eMarketer.

By comparison Facebook, the world’s most popular online social network, generated more than $12 billion in revenue in 2014. The growing service hit one billion users in a single day for the first time on Monday.
To promote the new formats on Thursday, Walt Disney Co released exclusive footage of its upcoming film, “Star Wars, The Force Awakens,” using the new landscape option.
Instagram for iOS version 7.5 is available today in Apple’s App Store, and Instagram for Android version 7.5 is available today on Google Play.

Pentagon teams up with Apple, Boeing to develop wearable tech
Carter said funding for the Obama administration's newest manufacturing institute would go to the FlexTech Alliance, a consortium of 162 companies, universities and other groups, from Boeing (BA.N), Apple (AAPL.O) and Harvard, to Advantest Akron Polymer Systems and Kalamazoo Valley Community College.
The group will work to advance the development and manufacture of so-called flexible hybrid electronics, which can be embedded with sensors and stretched, twisted and bent to fit aircraft or other platform where they will be used.
"This is an emerging technology that takes advanced flexible materials for circuits, communications, sensors and power and combines them with thinned silicon chips to ultimately produce the next generation of electronic products," Carter said.
He was speaking at NASA's Ames Research Center in the heart of Silicon Valley.
The consortium, which will be managed by the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory, will add $90 million to the federal money. Local governments will chip in more, boosting the group's total five-year funding level to $171 million.
Defense officials say the rapid development of new technologies around the globe is forcing the Pentagon to seek partnerships with the private sector rather than developing most of its technology itself, as it once did.
"I've been pushing the Pentagon to think outside our five-sided box and invest in innovation here in Silicon Valley and in tech communities across the country," Carter said.
The Flexible Hybrid Electronics Manufacturing Innovation Hub, which will be based in San Jose, is the seventh of nine such institutes planned by the Obama administration in an effort to revitalize the U.S. manufacturing base.
The Pentagon established its first institute in 2012 to help advance the development of 3-D printing.
The institute funded on Friday aims to use high-end printing technology to create specialized, stretchable electronics that could be embedded with sensors and worn by soldiers.
The technology also could ultimately be used to integrate sensors directly onto the surfaces of ships or warplanes, allowing real-time monitoring of their structural integrity.
Carter also met on Friday with the Defense Science Board for a briefing on its latest study on how autonomous military drones and robots should be in the future.
The department has become increasingly dependent upon drones and other robots of varying degrees of autonomy, using them for everything from surveillance and reconnaissance to delivery of supplies and carrying loads for ground troops.

Apple to launch new iPhones on 9 September; will discontinue iPhone 5c
In line with reports earlier this month, Apple is all set to host its next-gen iPhone launch event on September 9. The company will be live streaming the event on Mac, iPhone, iPad, Apple TV and also for PC users.
The company has started sending invites to some media houses for the event to be held at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco, California. The event image reads, “Hey Siri, give us a hint.”
The company has ensured that Siri is a part of its media invite this time. Take a look below:

“Apple has also internally prototyped a new, smaller iPhone with a 3.5-inch display, the same size of the iPhone’s screen from the first model in 2007 to the iPhone 4S in 2011, but it does not appear that the company plans to move forward with actually releasing such a device,” the report further adds. It further adds that the company plans to discontinue iPhone 5c, but the iPhone 5s, 6 and 6 Plus sales will continue.

The list of new products to be launched at the September event also includes the new Apple TV. Reports earlier this month hinted at Apple’s talks with ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox ‘rapidly gaining momentum. The company had earlier planned to launch the Apple TV at WWDC. However, the plan was canned as Apple didn’t want to take away the focus from its new OS or music streaming service.

Facebook launches ‘Donate Now’ button for NGOs
Facebook for Business has rolled out a new Donate Now button. The button will be available for non-profit organisations and will be available on Pages and link ads too. This new call-to-action button is yet to rollout to all users.
“We are excited to introduce a new “Donate Now” call-to-action option on both link ads and Pages. Now, it’s easier than ever for nonprofits to connect with people who care about their causes and encourage them to contribute through the website of their choice,” Facebook for Business writes in a post.
Talking about the new feature, a Facebook spokesperson told Mashable, “We’re inspired by how much good comes from these connections, so we’ve added a ‘Donate Now’ call-to-action on Pages and link ads to make those connections easier than ever.”
In order to avoid misuse, the button is only available for NGOs. Users can now try the feature on the ALS Association Facebook Page. Compared to the buttons introduced previously such as “Shop Now”, “Book Now or even the Donate button rolled out earlier, this one reportedly is different and takes you directly outside of the social network and no details are asked within the site.

Flipkart adds new social feature Ping to app; has no plans to go app-only anytime soon
eCommerce major Flipkart today said it is focused on developing products for mobile devices but has not decided on the timeline to go app-only.
The Bengaluru-based firm, which today added a social feature ‘Ping’ to its app, has about 50 million monthly active users of its mobile app.
“We are focusing on mobile. There is a huge market. 900 million people today have mobile phones in the country…
However, there is no timeline on shutting down any other format,” Flipkart Chief Product Officer Punit Soni told reporters here. Flipkart is one of the country’s largest online market place and competes with the likes of Snapdeal, Amazon and smaller players in the country.
Myntra, a company that Flipkart acquired last year, has already gone app-only. Talking about Ping, Soni said the idea is to add the social experience to online shopping.
“Traditionally, when people shopped, they would ask their family and friends for opinion. For online, it happens in isolation where you may share screen shots with friends, asking for their opinion,” he added.
With Ping, users can chat with friends in their phonebook in a WhatsApp-like chat window and share product details directly from the Flipkart’s mobile app. The product took 4-5 months to develop. Currently in beta stage, Ping will be available through an invite only model in the beginning.

A battery which can charge your phone in six minutes flat
Scientists have developed a new battery made with aluminium-filled capsules that could charge your cellphone in six minutes.
The battery has four times the capacity of current lithium ion batteries and degrades less over time.
It uses nanoparticles with a shell of titanium dioxide wrapped around aluminium, which acts as the battery’s negative electrode.
Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Tsinghua University in Beijing found that the metal could expand and shrink freely by encasing the aluminium inside a shell, ‘The Times’ reported.
The research overcomes previous problems experienced using aluminium in rechargeable lithium ion batteries.
Aluminium is a high capacity material but it can double in volume and shrink again as it is charged and discharged. The repeated shedding and reforming of the layer consumes lithium and reduces the battery’s capacity.
The study was published in the journal Nature Communications.
