Qualcomm’s upcoming Snapdragon 820 chip aims to offer ‘DSLR-quality’ mobile photos



Qualcomm has shared some details on its upcoming Snapdragon 820 chip. The company has stated that its chip is ‘designed to support superior DSLR-quality photography’ along with ‘enhanced computer vision.’

According to Qualcomm’s Blog, latest versions of the Qualcomm Adreno GPU and Qualcomm Spectra camera ISP (image signal processor) aim to bring significant performance, power efficiency, and user experience advances to upcoming Qualcomm Snapdragon processors.



The company adds that the Adreno 530 will deliver up to 40 percent improvement to graphics performance and computing compared to the previous Adreno 430. Also, the brand new Spectra camera dual-ISP will support ‘the latest 14-bit sensors for a wider range of colors and more natural skin tones.’

In addition, users can also expect better photos through the hybrid autofocus framework and multi-sensor fusion algorithms that support next generation computational photography.

 “We’re significantly enhancing the visual processing capabilities of Snapdragon to support next-generation user experiences related to computational photography, computer vision, virtual reality and photo-realistic graphics on mobile devices, all while maximizing battery life,” Qualcomm’s Vice President of Product Management, Tim Leland, said in a statement.

The Snapdragon 820 with the Adreno 530 and Qualcomm Spectra are expected to show up in new devices in the first half of 2016.

According to a previous report, Qualcomm haD announced a refresh to its mid-range and entry level mobile chipset lineup with the launch of Snapdragon 616, 412 and 212 SoCs. These new system on chips will replace Snapdragon 615, 410 and 210 SoCs respectively.

All the three SoCs are based on the 28nm manufacturing process and are most likely minor updates to the lineup. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 616 has got a minor bump in the processor clock speed whereas the entry level Snapdragon 412 and 212 will be getting the benefits of LTE and carrier aggregation. This means that future smartphones sporting these chips will be 4G LTE capable.
